X Games

Short History

In 1993 ESPN management decided to devote significant resources to the creation of an international gathering of action sport athletes, and in 1994, at a press conference in New York City, ESPN announced that the first summer Extreme Games will be held in Rhode Island in 1995. In 1996, the event name Extreme Games officially changed to the X Games, and held annually in the United States since then. The Summer X Games includes competitions in skateboarding, BMX biking, motorcycling, rally car racing, and surfing. In 1997, the X Trials, a qualifying event for the X Games, began in Providence, and in 1998, the first-ever international X Games qualifying event was held.
