Short History

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a women’s professional basketball league in the United States. It is the National Basketball Association's (NBA) affiliate. The league was founded on April 22, 1996 as the women's counterpart to the NBA. It was officially approved by the NBA Board of Governors on April 24, 1996 and league play started in 1997 with eight teams. The WNBA had to compete with the recently formed American Basketball League, another professional women's basketball league that began play in the fall of 1996, but would cease operation during its 1998/99 season and many of the ABL's star players then joined the rosters of WNBA teams and, in doing so, enhanced the overall quality of play in the league.
The 1999 season began with a collective bargaining agreement between players and the league, marking the first collective bargaining agreement to be signed in the history of women's professional sports. Teams and the league were collectively owned by the NBA until the end of 2002, when the NBA sold WNBA teams either to their NBA counterparts in the same city or to a third party. Some teams are associated with an NBA team from the same market and are known as sister teams, while some teams are in the same market as an NBA team but are not affiliated. Some share a market with an NBA G League team and some teams are all independently owned. There have been a total of 18 franchises in WNBA history.
The WNBA regular season is played from May to September, with the All Star Game being played midway through the season in July. During years in which the Summer Olympics are held, the WNBA takes a month off in the middle of the season to allow players to practice and compete with their respective national teams. The WNBA Playoffs usually begin in late September and the final playoff round, known as the WNBA Finals, is held in October. In 2020, the WNBA announced a new in-season tournament, the Commissioner's Cup, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic plans were placed on hold.
